Great New Year’s Travel Resolutions and an Awesome Traveluster Giveaway!

traveluster giveaway

Before the first month of 2014 draws to a close, I wanted to revisit some of the best new year’s travel resolutions I’ve come across from other travelusters:

From T+L readers:

“Figure out how to travel near and far with my new carry-on: a baby!” Kate Appleton

Near and dear to my heart, of course! At least after June 13 (my due date).

“Hoteliers, lock up your pens! I plan to start swiping the in-room writing implements, so that when I’m sitting in the old folks home writing letters (assuming paper still exists) I’ll have lots of great memories with each one.” Kathryn O’Shea-Evans

I love this one! Creative and thoughtful.

“On my travel to-do list: Follow the country-blues-jazz trail with my musician son, from the clubs and roadhouses of Nashville and Memphis, to the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta, to the all-night jam sessions on Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Now that’s a hepcat holiday!” Mark Orwoll

I want to go! There’s Nashville popping up yet again! Oh, and New Orleans, which I also home.

“Make more of an effort to meet locals and speak foreign languages.” @wanderbliss

I think everyone should have this on their resolution list!

“In 2014, I plan to travel by plane/train/car to at least 1 place I’ve never been for at least 2 days, every month.” @PTVagabond

This is a good one. I may borrow it…. Even if it’s to drive to a new city or state each month! Doable, right?

“#2014 #travel resolution: travel as much as possible to places I love & places I’ve never been, 1st trip #Nashville.” @vinogger

Hahaha- Nashville is on trend! What can I say? Come visit me!

“Talk to hotel staff about where to go to experience the real culture of a town.” @Simon_C71

Yea, Simon! That’s what I’m talking about! Skip the tourist traps and “live” like a local.

“To incorporate more of the outdoors into my travel, like hiking in New Zealand.” @YasumatsuJaime

We should all take time to be in nature more. It heals the soul.

That necklace is fantastic! I don’t know what my travel resolution is… we’ve been more focused on settling down lately. Probably to see more of Mexico!

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:42 PM #

It does seem very “you,” Steph (the necklace). Keep on seeing Mexico! I’ve been loving your posts!

  4. Andrew Kippen January 24, 2014 at 11:14 AM #

    Travel resolutions:
    – Make time for mystery during my travels; don’t plan everything.
    – Travel more with a purpose – if I need to decorate my house, travel to Morocco. If I need a suit, travel to Hong Kong, Bangkok or Italy.
    – Start conversations with everyone while I travel; Give people the opportunity to surprise you!
    – Take a trip with my fair lady.

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:41 PM #

I love these, Kip! You seem like you’d be a very outgoing traveler. Travel with a purpose is a great motto… in fact, I’m thinking of taking things to the next level of purposeful travel myself!

  5. Keryn Means January 24, 2014 at 11:29 AM #

My resolutions include learning CSS so I can do more custom work on my site without relying on a web designer, to really hone in on my editorial, to finally get to south america (not looking good 🙁 and to see my best friend in Switzerland again (that one will def come true!)

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:38 PM #

OK, Keryn- I’m going to borrow your resolution, too! The CSS part. Good call! I’m too dependent!

  6. Marissa Sutera January 24, 2014 at 11:47 AM #

Love this post! My favorite resolution is making more of an effort to meet locals and learn foreign languages. It makes travel so much more enjoyable and rewarding!

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:36 PM #

Thanks! And agreed, Marissa! That’s my absolute favorite thing about traveling!

  7. Laura January 24, 2014 at 11:50 AM #

i mean, i love everything about this!! what a great idea and that necklace is really cool. i cannot believe you found the one thing i haven’t been able to find since SF.

even if i don’t win, you gotta tell me where i can get one. 🙂

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:36 PM #

      I’ll hook you up LJ….

  8. Mara January 24, 2014 at 11:54 AM #

My resolution in 2014 has been to travel *less* but that’s so I can save up for an even bigger trip in 2015. 🙂 And guess what – your due date is 2 days before my birthday. A nice time of year to be born if ever there was one!

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:35 PM #

Woah- Mara! Your b-day is the day before my husband’s! June’s a magical month! I like your idea of saving up for the big trip….

  9. Whit January 24, 2014 at 12:12 PM #

I want to travel outside the US this year 🙂

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:33 PM #

And you shall, my dear, you shall! I’m so excited about your Africa travel aspirations. So proud of you!

  10. A Brit and A Southerner January 24, 2014 at 12:46 PM #

Looking forward to a great year of travel in 2014! Kicking off our travels tomorrow with a trip to Philadelphia for the weekend. Also excited about following you on your travels.

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:32 PM #

Awesome Chris! Philly should be pretty chilly but charming (with snow?). Excited to follow your travels as well!

  11. Camels & Chocolate January 24, 2014 at 1:04 PM #

Love, love, LOVE this necklace! And love that you live in Nashville now. We need a meet-up soon (I’m seeing Renee for drinks on Wednesday actually!).

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:31 PM #

Hey Kristin! Would LOVE to meet up! We’re in West Palm next week, but should be around most of Feb. Maybe we could have y’all over to the house- or grab a bite/coffee (I could do mocktails too). 😉

  12. Trips By Lance January 24, 2014 at 1:15 PM #

This is a great post. I really like the idea of traveling somewhere for at least two days once a month. I’ve heard of other people say they want to take one trip per month. I can’t live up to either one in the technical sense; sometimes I travel two or three times in a month and take a break the next month. As long as it all balances out, though.

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:29 PM #

Good call, Lance! Maybe I should aim for traveling somewhere new on average once a month (which could mean no travel for 2 months then 3 places the next month?)

  13. Chandler January 24, 2014 at 1:16 PM #

I MUST WIN!!! I need that necklace for my Asia trip :). And I’ve already started on one of those resolutions…to speak in the native language of the country I’m visiting. I’ve been calling Tulip “churippu,” her name in Japanese 🙂

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 1:27 PM #

Aw! Little Churippu! I love it!! My cat already has a Japanese name- haha!

  14. Flashpacker Family January 24, 2014 at 4:50 PM #

Such a pretty necklace! I want it!!!

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 8:20 PM #

      Go for it, Bethaney!!!

  15. Kimmy I AfterGlobe January 24, 2014 at 5:02 PM #

Such a cute necklace! Would be perfect as an accessory for my travel capsule wardrobe.

    • Lindsay January 24, 2014 at 8:19 PM #

I love it, Kimmy! This would fit nicely with your travel capsule ensemble!

  16. Cat of Sunshine and Siestas January 25, 2014 at 4:09 AM #

I love this! I didn’t have any resolutions regarding travel this year, but my itchy feet got the best of me – I booked a ticket to India on a whim!

    • Lindsay January 25, 2014 at 11:28 AM #

Well, I love THAT, Cat! Ticket to India on a whim! Fantastic!

  17. Louise Murray January 25, 2014 at 12:16 PM #

I am the “gypsy” in my family~I LOVE too travel !!!! I was born under a “wandering star”~
Would LOVE to Win this Giveaway…LOVE the necklace~my father is a retired pilot~

    • Lindsay January 25, 2014 at 4:03 PM #

Good luck, Louise! Sounds like this would be a perfect necklace for you!

  18. Melissa January 25, 2014 at 5:54 PM #

My resolution this 2014 is to become a more diligent travel photographer – take pictures of EVERYTHING that strikes me as interesting, and cull later!

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:30 PM #

Good resolution, Melissa. I need to be better with my photography in general. If I were more organized, it might not be as time consuming to edit and organize in Light Room. Sometimes I blow off photography because the organizational task seems daunting (and I haven’t caught up from the past 15 years yet). So photo organization would be my resolution.

  19. Lindsey January 25, 2014 at 6:59 PM #

Lovely giveaway – my big travel resolution this year is to spend more time exploring my immediate surrounds.

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:26 PM #

Good one, Lindsey! I have that goal as well. I want to take advantage of the live music scene here in “Music City” this year.

  20. Tom January 25, 2014 at 10:57 PM #

    My travel resolutions:
    Eat where the locals eat.
Hold conversations with everyone we meet.
    Pack lighter!

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:25 PM #

I love these, Tom! Packing lighter is constant goal, and I’m always trying to improve! Eat where locals eat, I always strive for this one as well. Crowded street-food vendors are always a good sign. Holding conversations- definitely room for improvement! I’m good at saying hi and starting the dialogue, but I can be shy, too. More confidence would lead to more meaningful interactions…

  21. Annabel Krantz January 26, 2014 at 3:26 AM #

Great post! I love the pen-stealing idea… although knowing me I’ll end up with an obsessively large number of pens… Unfortunately I live in Australia so can’t enter your giveaway, but I’m following you anyway! Happy Travels.

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:18 PM #

Thanks, Annabel! I’ll try to include Australians in another contest! Another idea, similar to pens, is matchbooks. My parents used to collect them and had a big vase full. I always loved looking through them. I think I’ll start that up again!

  22. Rusha Sams January 26, 2014 at 7:14 AM #

The necklace is adorable, but what I really like is your resolve to travel closer to home. I’m doing the same thing! Can’t wait to see what you see right around your corner!

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:09 PM #

And we’ve already started, Rusha! We’re “exploring” and discovering wildlife – birds!- right from our own home. We hung a bird feeder and have new birds every day! Bluebirds, blue jays, cardinals, hermit thrush…. It’s amazing! We must take 200 photos every morning!

  23. brittany o January 26, 2014 at 8:05 AM #

In 2014 I will SLOW DOWN and TRAVEL ON! traveling with a toddler is so very different than adults-only travel; I will be more inspired and less annoyed by traveling with a kids point of view!

    • Lindsay January 26, 2014 at 12:15 PM #

This is a great one, Brittany! I can’t stop thinking about how different my travel style will be now with a little one! I’m excited yet a little apprehensive. I like the idea of traveling slowly!

  24. Modern-Day Nomads (@moderndaynomads) January 26, 2014 at 2:28 PM #

Love the necklace! My 2014 travel resolution is to develop better foreign language skills.

    • Lindsay January 28, 2014 at 5:53 PM #

Ahh, the old language resolution. I wish I had more of a mind for language. I think it’s one of the coolest skills to have- the ability to quickly learn a language. I struggled with Spanish my whole life. Despite being a very devoted student, I still never perfected the skill!

  25. jillabon January 27, 2014 at 9:39 AM #

I resolve to travel within the U.S. to new places this year…..with our new baby!

    • Lindsay January 28, 2014 at 5:51 PM #

Good one, Jill! Perhaps Utah? 😉

  26. Marysia @ My Travel Affairs January 27, 2014 at 2:12 PM #

Those are really great resolutions. I myself do not make New Year’s Eve resolutions but I do birthday ones! They include, as usual, travel more, meet more famaily and friends, learn a new language, start another work project etc etc

    • Lindsay January 28, 2014 at 5:50 PM #

Those all sound like worthy goals to me, Marysia! I wish I was more of a language person. I feel like every year I think I should practice my Spanish to become fluent again, but it never seems to happen. I always long to see friends and family more- even if I don’t overtly make advance plans to do so (I usually make it happen, though).

  27. Monica Stott (@TheTravelHack) January 28, 2014 at 3:38 AM #

That necklace is so cute and there are some great resolutions in here. Mine is to take more weekend trips around Europe. Last year I took lots of ‘big trips’ which I really love but they’re exhausting when you work full time too. This year my travels will be more relaxing!

    • Lindsay January 28, 2014 at 5:48 PM #

Relaxing travel sounds wonderful. I think I’ve only every had a truly relaxing experience (as in, no drama, not having to plan things daily, etc.) maybe once or twice in my adult life! My trips are usually fun and exciting but also fairly stressful (which obviously never deters me!)

  28. Emma C. Evans January 28, 2014 at 4:20 PM #

I probably can’t go anywhere in 2014 but I hope to save up a lot more money to put towards the summer program in Asia I want to do in a few years!

    • Lindsay January 28, 2014 at 5:45 PM #

That’s a great goal, Emma! Saving up for and planning a big trip is often just as rewarding as the trip itself! I personally love the anticipation, then the reflection months and years later. It’s like having three totally different emotional perspectives of the experience!

  29. jeannettecary1 January 29, 2014 at 12:43 PM #

Hey Lindsay! I am from Baton Rouge and I have just moved back here in December 2012 after 20 years of traveling and living on islands for the19 years and sailing the Caribbean for 11 years! What an adjustment! I am happy to be back with family and it is a new kind of journey to begin putting down roots here again. I LOVE the WanderLust necklace and I love your blog, too!

    • Lindsay January 29, 2014 at 2:14 PM #

Hey Jeannette! Wow! So cool that you’ve been sailing around the Caribbean for 19 years!! Very Jealous! I would take one month! haha. And such a small world that you are from Baton Rouge! It’s changed A LOT in 20 years, hasn’t it?? 🙂 I would be interested to hear your opinion on then and now… So many more restaurants and activities…. Maybe we could grab coffee next time I’m “home” and talk travel! I’m going to the Dominican Republic in April, so would love to pick your brain!!

  30. Judy February 2, 2014 at 12:27 AM #

Definitely wish to have more in-depth travel experiences by contributing more! I’ve been travelling for so long but I always feel I’m only scratching the surface when I visit places or even just have a chat with locals.

    • Lindsay February 3, 2014 at 7:14 PM #

Right on, Judy! That’s how I like to travel! Having deep experiences and getting to know locals. I’d love to start a travel company that focuses on deep, meaningful interactive experiences!

  31. Alouise February 4, 2014 at 6:39 AM #

I totally entered the contest, before I realized it’s only for US residents, but I’ll share my travel resolutions for 2014 – I really want to go to New York to celebrate my 30th birthday with my friends.

    • Lindsay February 4, 2014 at 3:24 PM #

I hope you get to NYC w/ your friends, Alouise!

  32. Jennifer February 4, 2014 at 9:38 PM #

2014 is to visit both TBEXs and Iceland! I’m even hitting Chicago. Busy year!

    • Lindsay February 5, 2014 at 4:33 PM #

Maybe I’ll see you at TBEX! If not the U.S. then Europe?

  33. Mary February 8, 2014 at 6:52 PM #

    Adorable necklace and such good.resolutions!

  34. Mary February 8, 2014 at 6:53 PM #

My resolution is to slow down while traveling to experience more without being rushed

    • Lindsay February 8, 2014 at 8:10 PM #

That’s a good one, Mary! I was recently planning an upcoming trip, trying to think about how many cities I could squeeze in. I’ve decided to do less (cities) and see/experience more! Quality over quantity every time!

  35. Jaylyn February 10, 2014 at 3:30 PM #

Resolution is to do more research about the area I’m going to before I head off…and of course to read a novel by an author from that area during the trip.

    • Lindsay February 10, 2014 at 3:48 PM #

Good one Jaylyn! I need to do more cultural and historical research before traveling, too!

  36. ladyofthezoos February 10, 2014 at 5:12 PM #

Love this necklace and have been looking for a travel talisman!

    • Lindsay February 10, 2014 at 6:07 PM #

Good luck!! Maybe you will win it!

  37. Leslie February 10, 2014 at 9:57 PM #

I’ll be in your shoes with a new baby, not to mention keeping up with the other 2 boys! Need to explore more of what’s nearby, will be visiting family too.

    • Lindsay February 11, 2014 at 1:13 PM #

You’re going to have your hands FULL Les! Maybe we can come visit y’all! That is one of my major travel goals for this year- explore nearby states- I’ve never been to many of them! Kentucky, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio….. Hoping to take baby girl on some road trips (if Alan will let me ;-)…)
